Golden Gate National Recreation Area Tours

I hired Nik to show me and five friends the highlights on the other side of the Golden Gate Bridge - Muir Woods, Sausalito, the bunkers, and so on. It was fantastic for multiple reasons. First, the itinerary was a true collaboration between us - I had a ton of ideas and Nik figured out how to translate that into a coherent itinerary that made logical sense taking into account distances, times of day, and the weather. Second, because he grew up in the area, his commentary was personal anecdotes that put what we were seeing in greater sociological context. Third, whenever the weather turned crappy, which happened a lot, he could instantly pivot to a perfect Plan B. Fourth, he went above and beyond to arrange things we needed that I could not have done myself because I was coming from out of town, including a birthday cake (!) for someone in the group, which was served in the perfect scenic spot. Fifth, his recommendation lunch place was awesome and I never would have known about it. Sixth, it was just a good vibe overall with someone who was on our wavelength and not just a robotic and overly formal guide. Anyway, I could go on and on. Suffice it to say, highly recommend.

I always book locals for private tours - because my time on spot is super limited - Nick is maybe one of the best guides you can have. Just tell him what you want to know or see or whats your interesst and he will make something just for you. He knows exactly where to go to, what angle or spot to use for your mobile phone and the results are incredible. We had an incredible time on the photo tour with Nik in San Francisco. From the moment we met him, he made us feel welcome and excited to explore. I thought I knew most of the trails around Marin, but our local guide (Nik) took us on a long and epic gravel ride that I never knew existed. I got to see a side of Marin that I’d never explored before. He gave us some options and we chose the toughest one. Not gonna lie – it was challenging, but all the more satisfying for it. (As were the beers and burgers afterward.) This guy really knows the area and how to set up your day based on your skill level.

I got the feeling Nik knows every tree and blade of grass in Marin County by name. Our hiking trip was full of interesting historic and natural facts, and he explained everything beforehand so we knew just what to expect on each section of the trail. Another cool thing was stopping at all the good viewpoints to take pictures. He helped me get some great shots, and also took pics of our group as we hiked. This was a very satisfying and rewarding way to get deep into nature outside of SF after sitting in meetings all week. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

My wife and I had an incredible time exploring with Nik during our visit from Seattle! Having been to SF many times we’d already hit the usual tourist spots and were looking for something unexpected.Nik tailored the adventure perfectly to our schedule and interests. Instead of a long, strenuous hike, we opted for a mix of shorter, easier walks to several unique and stunning locations. We started with a beautiful waterfall, then wandered through redwood canyons where we discovered little “Hobbit” houses tucked into the forest. From there, we drove along the Sausalito waterfront, stopped for incredible views of the Golden Gate Bridge, and explored some eerie old WWII era bunkers.The highlight of the day was our final stop, an abandoned military base perched on a massive cliff overlooking the Pacific Ocean. The sunset views were absolutely breathtaking, and the photos we captured were some of the best from our entire trip.This was hands down one of the most memorable tours we’ve ever taken. If you’re looking for a personalized, off-the-beaten-path adventure in the Bay Area, this is it! Nik is a native of the SF Bay having grown up in Marin. His knowledge of the area is amazing and you can sense how much he enjoys sharing the beauty and history with those that he takes out on these fun adventures.

What a cool experience! We were originally interested in a day-hike, but Nik mentioned that if we waited until the evening, we’d be able to see the sunset and moonrise at almost the same time. And, also that night, there happened to be a comet. So, we decided to take his advice and are so glad we did! We started in the afternoon and hiked to a hilltop with 360 views of the ocean on one side and the whole Bay Area on the other, including the Golden Gate Bridge and SF. The timing was perfect. We reached the top just as the sun was going down, and 5 mins later, the full moon came up on the other side, above the bridge and city. Then, we hiked back down to the car by moonlight, we barely needed our flashlights. And on the way, we could see the comet too, although it was pretty faint because the moon was so bright. We got some awesome pics, too. He gave us pointers on how to make the most of the light in each shot and how to crop the shots. I completely recommend booking something with Nik if you want a cool experience. He's a super nice guy and has a great enthusiasm for helping others to enjoy exploring this area that he loves.

I’m glad we found this option! I was in town for work and wanted to see some of the area before heading home, but not with a typical packaged tour. My friends and I are pretty athletic, so we wanted something active. Mountain biking was our first choice, but we couldn’t find any real bike excursions beyond just pedaling across the bridge on bike paths. Then I saw this listing and it turned out to be really cool! The guide, Nik, was super flexible and took us on some trails that we never could have found on our own. It was a mix of redwood forests and big hills with awesome ocean views and fast descents. I got the sense that he does hiking and running and photography tours also, so I definitely recommend this if you’re not into the tour-bus scene. Nik shared his history in the area and it was clear during our excursion that he knows a lot. We would have never found some of the routes and views we visited on our own. Thanks Nik!

My wife and I had a great time seeing some awesome places with Nik during our visit from Seattle. We’ve been to SF several times and have seen all the usual tourist places so we wanted something different. This was perfect! We didn’t have time for a huge hike and we wanted a variety of sights, so we ended up driving from spot to spot and doing shorter/easier hikes to the cool things along the way. We checked out a nice waterfall and then headed up into the redwood canyons to see some interesting “Hobbit” houses built into the forest. Then we drove along the Sausalito waterfront and up to a hill overlooking the Golden Gate Bridge and the national parklands. We explored some creepy old bunkers, too. The highlight was at the end when we went to this abandoned old military base sitting on the edge of a huge cliff with amazing views of the sunset. The photos we took were awesome, too!

We went mountain biking with Nik and had a blast! My buddy came to visit from New York and he wanted to go biking, but I haven’t done much riding around here and didn’t know where to go. Nik said we could rent bikes at Tam Bikes in Mill Valley (it was quick, easy, and they had exactly what we needed) and took us on this epic loop up Mt. Tam and out to the coast. The trails were challenging but not too technical. Lots of climbing and lots of fun downhills on single track. At each junction, he explained our options and gave us choices so we knew what we were getting into. He also coached me a bit on keeping my weight back and how to use my brakes in corners. It was a great day with awesome riding for our different skill levels. The views were amazing. We didn’t have time to do any photo coaching but he got some cool pics of us biking. We were pretty tired at the end, and starving for burritos! Book a day with Nik for biking or hiking. You won’t be disappointed.
